   Nigerians, groups want abductor arrested, prosecuted


Fourteen year old Ese Rita Oruru, who was allegedly abducted by Yunusa Dahiru has been discovered to be about five months pregnant. It was also discovered that the white Hijab dress she wore on her arrival from Kano on Tuesday, was a decoy to cover the pregnancy even though her physical condition and looks created a suspicion.
Inspector General of Police, IGP Solomon Arase issued a directive that she should be handed over to the Gender and Child Protection Unit and later, a team from the Medical Department of the Force to carry out a comprehensive medical examination of the girl-child at the Police Medical Facility in Area 1, Garki, upon certifying her medical status and emotional state.
The IGP, feeling uncomfortable with the transport arrangement of the mother that they return by road, cancelled the arrangement and directed that both Ese and her mother be flown to Yenegoa by air.
Consequently, the IGP has directed the Bayelsa State Police Command to take over investigation in the child violence offence saga, because according to sources, the offence was committed in Bayelsa which is the place of residence of the abductor, Yunusa Dahiru.
Arase said all civil efforts to secure the release and reunion of the 14-year-old teenage girl allegedly abducted since August last year and taken to Kano by Yunusa Dahiru, also known as Yellow, were hampered by some bureaucratic and complex intertwining factors, as well as accompanying challenges by the Bayelsa state commissioner of police.
The IGP confirmed that, prior to her rescue, the girl was in the custody of the Kano State Sharia Commission.
Briefing newsmen at the Force Headquarters, Abuja yesterday, the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olabisi Kolawole said IGP Arase has assured that the abductor of Ese and other actors in the saga will be brought to deserved justice.
The Force spokesperson said, aside the prosecution of the actors directly involved in the case, the IGP has also ordered an in-house administrative enquiry designed to review the professional conducts of officers responsible for the initial investigation of the case. “Any officer indicted of professional dereliction will be firmly dealt with, accordingly,” ACP Kolawole stated.
“This is the only way this nation can make a clear statement in unison that any individual that violates the sanctity of the rights of our children shall be dealt with in accordance with extant laws of our country”, she assured.

St. Finbarr’s College Akoka, Lagos at the weekend won the annual Helmbridge Science Challenge for secondary schools in Lagos State.
