St. Finbaar’s College, Akoka wins the annual Helmbridge Science Challenge for secondary schools in Lagos State.

St. Finbarr’s College Akoka, Lagos at the weekend won the annual Helmbridge Science Challenge for secondary schools in Lagos State.

The school in a six-week-long competition defeated May Day College and Topgrade Secondary School, Surulere in the preliminaries to qualify for the final.
The Akoka boys who walked-over Penny International College Coker, the defending champions, for late coming, went into sporadic jubilation on their victory.
The News Agency of Nigeria, NAN reports that 16 schools participated in the competition, including Yaba College of Technology Secondary School, St. Finbaar’s College, Penny Internatinal College, Shining Lord’s Secondary and Technical School.
Others are St. Michael’s Anglican College, Jubilee Model Grammar school, Fountain Heights Secondary School, St. Gregory’s College and St. Jude’s Private Secondary School.
Also in the competition are Methodist Boys’ High School, Birch Freeman High School, Community Senior Grammar School and ABS College.
Speaking at the event, the Director of Helmbridge Study Centre, a non-profit organization, Mr. Christopher Itua, said the institution was out to groom young scientists.
“Since its inception in 1972 the organisation has been providing students the leeway to be the best in science subjects.
“We have products of this competition that are today parents and helmsmen of various multi-nationals.”
He called on business outfits in Nigeria to associate with the competition to enable so as to widen the scope of the competition.
A special guest at the event, Dr. Sylva Ashimole, who is the Managing Director of Peninsula Standard Trust Ltd., thanked the winners and charged them to live above board.
Ashimole, whose children passed through the competition in their early school days, said that his children were better off now as adults.
“They made good grades in the university and are good professionals in their chosen careers thanks to Helmbridge centre.”
He advised the students to make good use of the learning aids provided at the centre to become persons that society could be proud of.
Commenting on their wining, Austin Nzeamalu, an SS 2 student, said that if their opponent had come earlier, they would have defeated them.
“It is good they were walked-over so that they will learn to keep to time.
“We were taught punctuality and regularity as a motto and we have been keeping to it, today it paid off,” he said.
