Indian women bathe village’s top cop to appease rain gods


Women in northern India gave a bath to a police officer in an unusual attempt to appease the rain gods, officials and news reports said on Friday.
Groups of women reached a police station in a village in Uttar Pradesh state earlier this week with buckets of water and mugs asking the police chief to come out for a bath.
Villagers believe that if the ruler or king of the region is bathed publicly by women, the area receives rains and tides over a drought-like situation.
“Since there are no kings now, we asked the station house officer of the police station to participate in the ritual,” a local resident was quoted as saying by the Asian Age newspaper.
“We also requested him not to accept bribe for at least three days following the ritual,” she said in a jibe, referring to widespread government corruption.

ABEOKUTA —Former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (retd), yesterday, disclosed how he lobbied the matriarch of Awolowo family, late Mrs. HID Awolowo to convince her husband to serve as federal commissioner for finance and vice president of the Federal Executive Council under his administration during the civil war. St. Finbaar’s College, Akoka wins the annual Helmbridge Science Challenge for secondary schools in Lagos State.

St. Finbarr’s College Akoka, Lagos at the weekend won the annual Helmbridge Science Challenge for secondary schools in Lagos State. The school in a six-week-long competition defeated May Day College and Topgrade Secondary School, Surulere in the preliminaries to qualify for the final. The Akoka boys who walked-over Penny International College Coker, the defending champions, for late coming, went into sporadic jubilation on their victory.
