Anti-Corruption: The Series
“President Buhari meets with Nigerians in Kenya, says more areas of economic sabotage will be exposed when anti-graft war expands to other government agencies.”
-NTA headlines, Friday January 29, 2016, 12.38 am-ish.
Isn’t this just the sort of good news you expect,
as someone living in another country, to hear from your visiting president?
Although some would argue that President Buhari is now like a visitor to us
all-including Nigerians living in Nigeria. But I digress.
Eight months after becoming president and almost 12 months after winning the elections, what’s supposed to tickle Nigerians is how ‘more areas of economic sabotage will be exposed’? What about the burning questions about the actual cost of the president’s trips? Hardly had the president landed Abuja that he headed out again to France on Tuesday Feb 2. From there, he proceeded to the UK where he attended the Support Syria Conference “to raise fund to cushion the humanitarian problems faced by over 12.2 million people in Syria”.

Do you see anyone running to Nigeria to help
with our IDP situation? Nigeria
with over 3 million IDPs has Africa’s largest
population. There was also talk of helping with Syria’s 2 million children who are
out of school. Some say Nigeria
has at least 10 million children out of school.
So, forget the cost of President Buhari’s trips which Governor Fayose of Ekiti State says could cost up to 20 per cent of the federal budget; what’s Nigeria gaining from this globe trotting which we’re told says is no jamboree? Is it the consistent de-marketing of Nigeria by Nigeria’s president who should be Nigeria’s No 1 promoter: “My people are corrupt. My country is full of terrorists. My people are criminals.” And while Dalori was under siege, President Buhari was honouring dead (Kenyan) soldiers in Kenya.
By the way, there are few potential mini-series: ‘Debranding Brand Nigeria: The Series,’ ‘How Not To Prepare A Budget: The Series’, ‘How To Put The Cart Before The Horse, Naija Style’, etc
