Dream Team VI’s only way to make Nigerians happy is to play well and win on Sunday - Samson Siasia
The Rivers
State Government has thrown the gates at the Adokiye Amiesiamaka Stadium in
Port Harcourt open for Sunday’s Africa U-23 Championship qualifying match
between Nigeria’s Dream Team and Congo Red Devils.
The Chairman
of the Local Organising Committee (LOC), Boma Iyaye, who disclosed this at the
weekend, explained that the measure was part of efforts to ensure that the
nation’s U-23 team gets massive support when they confront the Congolese.
Iyaye
further assured that efforts had been put in place to ensure a memorable outing
for the Dream Team VI this weekend.
“His Excellency,
Governor Nyesom Wike gave the go ahead for Rivers State to host the Rio 2016
Olympic qualifier to demonstrate the importance his administration attaches to
sports development. It is against this background that the state government set
up various sub-committees to give the encounter a befitting organisation and
coordination,” he stated.
Already,
Governor Wike has graciously paid for the tickets and as such, fans don’t need
to pay to enter the stadium to cheer the Dream Team,” he added.
He said the
kind gesture of the governor was to ensure that the Dream Team VI does not lack
any support before, during and after the match.
He appealed
to the people of Rivers State and its environs to come out and give maximum
support to the team, while also calling for good behaviour from the fans in
order to ensure that Port Harcourt continues to host international matches.
The former
Rivers State Sports Commissioner used the opportunity to reiterate the state as
a safe ground for all manner of sporting activities, pointing out that the
state had successfully hosted several competitions without any incident.
He said the
administration of Governor Wike is one that would give opportunities for the
youths to develop their sporting talents, adding that Rivers would be a major
destination for sports.
Meanwhile,
Head Coach of the Dream Team VI, Samson Siasia, has expressed gratitude to the
LOC members for all they have done for the team since their arrival in Port
Harcourt, and assured that the only way they can make Nigerians happy is to
play well and win on Sunday.
