No one is above the law — Osinbajo
Prof. Osinbajo said ‘no one is above the law is the first rule of any developed country’ yesterday while receiving the leadership of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, on a courtesy visit to his office.
According to
him, “good economies are run by men not spirits. Men and women like you and I,
flesh and blood. There is no reason why our country cannot be well run.”
The key, the
VP noted, is the rule of law.
Prof.
Osinbajo added that “If somebody is held according to law, we must support
that. Let us support what is good and right for the country.”
While
commending the important role the road transporters play in the nation’s economy,
the Vice President noted that the union is “one of the truly national
organisations that Nigeria can boast of.”
He said the
very important role the union plays cannot be ignored, observing that its
members provide the “most accessible form of transportation for our people.
Road transport is the way by which we all move.”
Prof
Osinbajo then explained that it is because of the extremely strategic role of
the road transporters’ union that its members also carry “a great deal of
responsibility.”
According to
the Vice President, “your role comes with a great deal of responsibility and
with tremendous opportunity.”
He thanked
the union for its role in complying with the law, and urged the members to
continue upholding the law.
He explained
that one of the things President Muhammadu Buhari has said consistently is that
“our elites must understand that every privilege comes with responsibility,
like maintaining the peace and stability of this nation. Without peace, none of
us can function.”
To this end,
the Vice President restated the Buhari administration’s resolve to see the end
of Boko Haram.
“I believe
we would see the end of Boko Haram, because we hold ourselves responsible to
ensure that the insurgency does not continue,” Prof Osinbajo declared.
He urged
NURTW members to remain vigilant, because “those who are being used for the
attacks, the children, are conveyed from place to place.”
Continuing,
he said “these are children who don’t even know what they are doing. We can’t
call them suicide bombers. They don’t know they are bombing themselves.”
The Vice
President told the NURTW delegation that “we can educate our people, drivers,
people involved in transportation, to spread the message that we have to be
careful about carrying goods we can’t identify, and to report suspicious moves
to the authorities.”
He disclosed
that government will provide access to members of the union in order to pass on
useful information, adding “we must defeat this wrong doing. And the only way
to do so is for us all to work together.”
In his
address on behalf of the NURTW at the courtesy visit, Alhaji Najeem Usman
Yasin, the president of the union, said the leaders came to “personally
congratulate,” the president and the vice president on their “overwhelming and
well-deserved victory.”
He praised
the Buhari presidency for “adopting various strategies aimed at addressing
corruption and security challenges facing the country.
The NURTW
leader added that the union has implicit confidence in the Buhari Presidency’s
“ability to meet the challenges ahead, and transform Nigeria beyond our
expectations.”
