Man butchers friend in Uyo over N750, 000 debt
Police in
Akwa Ibom State has arrested one Stephen Ononna for the gruesome murder of his
friend, Mr. Daniel Bassey, over an alleged debt of N750,000.
Ononna, from Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State, is a graduate of
Federal Polytechnic, Oko, and has been living in Akwa Ibom for over two years
working for Africana FEP Publishers while his deceased friend, Bassey, was a
professional barber in Uyo and hailed from Uruan Local Government Area of Akwa
Ibom.
Briefing newsmen on the matter in Uyo yesterday, state Police Commissioner, Mr Gabriel Achong explained that the suspect was arrested after police trailed him following a tip off from people who know him.
Achong explained that the suspect had after killing the deceased with a machete in his house, cut his body into six parts and hid them in different locations.
“He kept the head separate, the two hands separate, the two legs separate; the private part was also kept separate and the main body was also kept separate.
“Following the discovery of the deceased body parts and subsequent investigation that led to the search of the suspect, detectives through information from some people close to him arrested him near a church in Uyo.
“I have also personally interacted with the suspect and found him to be mentally, physically and emotional sound, so nobody will say it was a vase of mental imbalance.
“All the deceased body parts have been recovered and have been deposited in the mortuary.” Achong explained.
In an interaction with newsmen, the suspect said he had not been involved in ritual killing and claimed to have killed the deceased out of anger, because “he has been owing me N750,000 for over two years and has refused to pay me the money even after he signed an agreement to pay when I took him to the Police.”
But neighbours and eye witnesses said the murder of Bassey was premeditated as the suspect had before the act called his friend on phone for urgent meeting in his house, where he drugged an Orijin beer already prepared for him.
