Six Months After, Shell Yet To Recover Spill In Rivers Community

The people of Edagberi community in Ahoada-West Local Government Area, Rivers State, have lamented the refusal of Shell Petroleum Development Company to complete the recovery of spilled crude oil six months after the incident occurred in their environment.

Described as “a major oil spill”,it was said to have destroyed flora and fauna within the area.
The oil spill which occurred  on 12 July 2015 at Shell’s Adibawa Well 8 took the company about five days to stop the spewing of volumes of crude oil into the impacted area.
After the incident, the paramount ruler of Edagberi, Sunny Jacob, and Shell had disagreed sharply over the outcome of the Joint Investigation Visit (JIV) conducted on the spill because the firm ‘secretly’ carried out clamping without involving the community.
Jacob had also debunked  Shell’s claim that the community denied its team of personnel access to the ruptured point on the facility that was reportedly breached by third party interference.
Following the intervention of the Rivers State House of Assembly and the Chairman of Ahoada-West Local Council, the community was prevailed upon to ‘ignore’ the JIV Report and allow Shell embark on full recovery of the spilled crude oil.
But six months after the truce was reached, the community has cried out that Shell had yet to complete the recovery process.
