Police Arrest Teacher In Adamawa After Peaceful Protest
Teachers in
Yola, the Adamawa
State capital, have
raised the alarm claiming to live in fear due to the current and incessant
harassment and intimidation as well as arrests of their colleagues by the
State Police Command.
Investigations revealed that, the Adamawa State Police Command has on Monday and Tuesday this week intimated and arrested some teachers in the State Capital who participated in the recent peaceful protest to press home their demands.
Teachers who spoke with newsmen on Tuesday alleged that some of their members were arrested by police while in their classes because of their involvement in the recently peaceful demonstration.
It could be recalled that the teachers took to the streets of Yola on Monday, 11th January, demanding the State Government to settle their outstanding entitlements among others when Government continued to pay deaf ears to their demands and entitlements.
According to the teachers, “we followed the due process before embarking on the peaceful demonstration to making their plight so known to the government.
Some of the arrested teachers while recounting their ordeals expressed astonishment over the arrest by the Nigerian Police for alleged illegal demonstration.
A teacher Edwin Omoraka told our Correspondent in an interview that, “I was in the school when some security operatives (police) came and told me and others that, you guys are needed at the station because you protested illegally”.
Edwin Omoraka explained that, before the teachers embarked on the protest, a letter was written to the Commissioner of Police, State Director of the SSS intimating them about our desire to embark on a one day peaceful protest.
Another teacher Ahmed Bobojji said, “they were in the classroom when some policemen approached them demanding to see the head master of the school , saying in the absent of the head master, they (police) will like to go with Ahmed Bobojji”.
